The Pittsburgh branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) welcomes Kellie Ware-Seabron, Esq. as its Executive Director
The Pittsburgh branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) welcomes Kellie Ware-Seabron, Esq. as its Executive Director. In her new role, Ware-Seabron will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the branch and manage its programming, community outreach, strategic planning, and fundraising efforts. She will report to the organization’s Executive Committee.
In a statement from the branch’s Search Committee Chairman, K. Chase Patterson says, “Kellie is smart, serious about justice, and totally committed to the mission of the NAACP movement. We believe that she brings a valuable combination of professional and leadership experience that will help to grow the work of the Pittsburgh NAACP as well as our impact on the condition of Black lives in our region. The Executive Committee is excited to work with Kellie and to see the results of her hard work and great ideas.”
Ware-Seabron comes to the NAACP from the City of Pittsburgh, where she served as its inaugural Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy Analyst for City Council. In this role, Kellie worked closely with numerous community and non-profit organizations, and government entities to advance racial equity in the City. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and Northeastern University School of Law, Ware-Seabron’s professional experience includes community economic development and government. Immediately before joining the City, she worked to secure tenants’ rights as a staff attorney at Neighborhood Legal Services.
A Pittsburgh native, Ware-Seabron, said she is “very excited for the opportunity to support the work of the Pittsburgh NAACP at this critical juncture. We’re at a crossroads as to what the future holds for Black folks in this City. Racism is a public health crisis, Black Pittsburghers could move virtually anywhere and have a better quality of life. Now what? I believe the Pittsburgh NAACP can and will play a critical role in moving the needle in the right direction for our City.”
Ware-Seabron officially joins the NAACP on February 1, 2020 and will make her first presentation to the General Membership on February 11, 2020 at 7:00 PM at Jeron X. Grayson Center – 1852 Enoch St, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
*******
The Pittsburgh Unit of the NAACP was organized in 1915 in the home of Attorney William H. Randolph. Among those present during the first meeting where NAACP founder W.E.B DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, and Walter White. Since its founding the Pittsburgh NAACP has intently focused on racial disparities in economics, health care, education, voter empowerment and the criminal justice system while also continuing its role as legal advocate for civil rights issues.

Lifestyles with Debbie Norrell | Is it just me or do you feel trapped?
Is it just me or do you feel trapped? The other day I had to get out of the house and yes I know that we are not restricted from taking a walk outdoors or riding a bike but so many of the establishments that I frequent are closed. Since retail therapy was out of the question I decided to take a walk around my neighborhood shopping center. The walk was two-fold I needed the exercise and the fresh-air but the investigative reporter in me wanted to see what was open and what was not and of course share the information with you.
Here are some of the stores that were closed or had limited hours as of March 19, 2020: Big Lots, Aldi, GNC and Dollar Tree were open. Planet Fitness was closed as well as the Penn Hills movie theatre. Rainbow was open as well as Giant Eagle. I was surprised to see that both wig stores in that shopping plaza were open. This made me think is this considered an essential item? Maybe the answer to that is a yes since hair salons are closed a lot of people are going to be on their own and may have to purchase a new look until they can get back to their stylist.
All humor aside, if you are going to go out and you should, be cautious. Keep your distance from people, wash your hands before you leave the house and as soon as you come home. Please don’t hoard things you don’t need and look in your cupboards and see what you can use before you buy a lot of things you don’t need. As a friend of mine used to say “this too will pass.”

Soul Pitt Quarterly Fall 2019 (Issue #39)
Get ready to fall in love with Soul Pitt Quarterly’s Fall 2019 Issue (#39)! It’s important to mention that three of the articles in this issue are poignant pieces. Donna Baxter Porcher, CEO of Soul Pitt Media, talks about the loss of her father in “Remember My Dad of Steel.” Craig Dawson, our VP of Sales & Marketing, shares his journey and battle over cancer with the help of Allegheny Health Network, and our managing editor, Bonita Penn, so passionately tells us about the many stress factors Black women deal with in “BREATHE, Why Black Women Can’t.” And if that wasn’t enough, it’s also packed with new advertisers and more positive stories about the people in the community. We thank you for your continued support and hope this issue truly touches your soul.
With this being our 39th issue, know that our next issue will have a special celebration. Please reserve your space for our January 2020 issue as we celebrate 10 years! Email adsales@thesoulpitt.com or call 412.407.SOUL to inquire about half, full or quarter page ads. We always sellout, get in early.

PHOTO REVIEW: August Wilson House Community Groundblessing Ceremony
It was an honor for Soul Pitt Media to be invited to the August Wilson House community Groundblessing ceremony in Pittsburgh’s Hill District on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Mr. Denzel Washington was here because he led the first phase fundraising for the construction of this project. Mr. Washington got a few of his friends like Oprah, Tyler Perry, Antoine Fuqua, Spike Lee, Shonda Rhimes, and others to donate a total of 5 million dollars. Although it rained, it didn’t rain on our parade. It was as if the ancestors were pouring their own libations down on us.
“The groundblessing will honor the legacy of August Wilson and his mother Daisy Wilson and spotlight the rich cultural history that served as the backdrop to Wilson’s cycle of plays,” shared Paul A. Ellis, Jr., founder of the Daisy Wilson Artist Community. “This project signals the importance of people, place, and memory in the development of one’s life – it is a timely lesson on what it means to work together in the preservation of diverse stories that center our humanity and have the power to transform the world.” Continue reading

Together, we can make our voices heard and spread the message further that
‘We Can and DO Recover!’ – but we need your help.
We are inviting you to post on our Facebook or tweet us with suggestions of what YOU want to see in these newsletters. We also want to remain a resource for any questions that may come up along the way.
Over the next few weeks we will be sending out a lot of exciting information regarding our Recovery Training Institute (RTI) as well as information on our future Community Forums – how you choose to connect is up to you! Here are three ways to stay in touch:
1) Through our Weekly Newsletter
2) Our FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/messagecarriers/
3) Follow us on Twitter (& tweet us!): https://twitter.com/MCofPA

Support a Local Business – Lend to Leona’s Ice Cream
We’ve been endorsing small business loans as a Kiva trustee since 2014. We were initially able to endorse loans up to $10,000, but we were recently given the opportunity to endorse loans up to $25,000! Join our lending team to follow along with local loans that we endorse.
We’re pleased to share that we are endorsing our first $25,000 loan for one of our local businesses, Leona’s Ice Cream. Leona’s moved to Wilkinsburg a few years ago, and though they don’t have a storefront, you can find their treats at local spots like Nancy’s East End Diner and the East End Food Co-op, among many other locations.
A loan of $25,000 will help Leona’s recover from a recent total loss of inventory following a freezer failure. Additionally, funds will help support their growth this spring.
We hope you’ll join us in supporting this great business by making a micro-loan of just $25 or more! Funds will be paid back to you over the course of the loan repayment, so there’s really nothing to lose. Support local business and lend to Leona’s Ice Cream today!
