Soul Pitt Quarterly Fall 2019 (Issue #39)

Get ready to fall in love with Soul Pitt Quarterly’s Fall 2019 Issue (#39)! It’s important to mention that three of the articles in this issue are poignant pieces. Donna Baxter Porcher, CEO of Soul Pitt Media, talks about the loss of her father in “Remember My Dad of Steel.” Craig Dawson, our VP of Sales & Marketing, shares his journey and battle over cancer with the help of Allegheny Health Network, and our managing editor, Bonita Penn, so passionately tells us about the many stress factors Black women deal with in “BREATHE, Why Black Women Can’t.” And if that wasn’t enough, it’s also packed with new advertisers and more positive stories about the people in the community.  We thank you for your continued support and hope this issue truly touches your soul.

With this being our 39th issue, know that our next issue will have a special celebration.  Please reserve your space for our January 2020 issue as we celebrate 10 years!  Email adsales@thesoulpitt.com or call 412.407.SOUL to inquire about half, full or quarter page ads.  We always sellout, get in early.

Demand that U.S. Steel invest in healthy communities, clean air, and jobs for the future.

It’s time for U.S. Steel to reinvest in the largest coke facility in the country. It’s time to make Clairton Coke Works the cleanest, most sustainable, and most technologically advanced coke facility in the country. It’s time to improve the Pittsburgh region’s air quality – currently ranked 8th worst in the county. Support a Local Business – Lend to Leona’s Ice Cream

leonaWe’ve been endorsing small business loans as a Kiva trustee since 2014. We were initially able to endorse loans up to $10,000, but we were recently given the opportunity to endorse loans up to $25,000! Join our lending team to follow along with local loans that we endorse.

We’re pleased to share that we are endorsing our first $25,000 loan for one of our local businesses, Leona’s Ice Cream. Leona’s moved to Wilkinsburg a few years ago, and though they don’t have a storefront, you can find their treats at local spots like Nancy’s East End Diner and the East End Food Co-op, among many other locations.

A loan of $25,000 will help Leona’s recover from a recent total loss of inventory following a freezer failure. Additionally, funds will help support their growth this spring.

We hope you’ll join us in supporting this great business by making a micro-loan of just $25 or more! Funds will be paid back to you over the course of the loan repayment, so there’s really nothing to lose. Support local business and lend to Leona’s Ice Cream today!

Diversity, Inclusion and Fairness.

diversitykirkland1

Mr. Kirkland is the Pennsylvania Department of General Services
Deputy Secretary for Diversity, Inclusion and Small Business Opportunities.

Diversity, Inclusion and Fairness. I’m certain we all are familiar with these three words and what they mean. In Pennsylvania’s state government system, however, they have become much more than words – they have become a way of life.

Darrell Warden: A Pittsburgh Success Story

By Christiana Dillard

“It’s always about being better.”  Darrell Warden, hiring manager for Team Warden & Team Tri-state Group (a part of The Miles Group Insurance Agency) is the embodiment of his own statement. The agency has personnel in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and even Delaware; and their motto, “One Vision,” exemplifies their commitment to “being better.”  And each day Warden personally strives to be the best.

Warden had his beginnings in Rankin, a low-income borough in the Greater Pittsburgh area. However, he refused to allow the town’s bleak environment to bring him down. He attended Full Sail University in Florida and went on to become a music executive at Bad Boy Records with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. Warden was at Bad Boy for ten years before moving back to Pittsburgh to work in the mortgage loan department at PNC Bank. When he was laid off from PNC, he found out that some of his old acquaintances were forming their own insurance group, headed by Troy Miles and hopped on board. For his role as a founding member of The Miles Group, Warden became a hiring manager for his own team within the agency and hasn’t looked back since. Continue reading
