Just wondering About that $250 Bill by Debbie Norrell

I’m sure you have heard the latest news from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There is wind that there may be new money on the horizon. A bill valued at $250 with a picture of the current President of the United States. I was amazed. The first thing that came to my mind was when would I have the need to use a $250 bill? At this time in my life, I rarely keep cash in my wallet and when I do the bills are small. The largest bill that I have used is a $100 dollar bill and I rarely carry those around. Is perhaps the bill going to be a keepsake and maybe as years go by the bill will be worth more money. I enjoy writing this column because I always find out something that I didn’t know and I hope that you learn something as well. Here is something that I did not know.

Larger denominations (like the $500, $1,000, and $10,000 bills) were historically printed and featured faces such as William McKinley, Grover Cleveland, James Madison, and Salmon P. Chase, but these have been out of circulation for decades. Perhaps those bills were used instead of a check for large purchases.

The Treasury Secretary decides who appears on U.S. bills, but living people cannot be featured.  That actually may change. Maybe you remember that there were plans to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill in 2016, but those plans were cancelled.

The news has become so interesting, and I keep my eyes and ears open each and every day. I want to see what happens next and how this administration will play out. There has not been a dull moment so far. How about you, do you have a need for a $250 bill?
