Creature of Habit by Debbie Norrell

If you know me, you know that I love to shop and eat, and when I go to chain restaurants, which is often, I typically order the same thing. When I am hungry, I don’t like surprises. Before I get to the meat of the column, something just crossed my mind. Have you been watching the “Internet famous” food critics Keith Hill and DariusCooks? They have been traveling around the United States, trying all Black owned restaurants. What I wonder is: are they hungry when they try out these restaurants, and does it make a difference? The other question that I have is: why are most of these critics male? Aren’t there any women out there checking out food? Now that I know how much money is in this social media game, I would love to be a food critic. Back to my love of fast food. The other day, I thought I was hungry and went to Wendy’s. My typical order at Wendy’s is an Apple Pecan Chicken salad. But for some reason, I ordered a double hamburger and fries. The sandwich was sloppy, and the fries were average. I should have gone to McDonald’s and gotten a Hamburger Happy Meal. That’s right, that is one of my favorite go to snacks. It’s under 500 calories, and it checks all the boxes: a small portion of fries, the taste I love of a McDonald’s hamburger, a few apple slices, a small drink, and sometimes a toy. When I go to my favorite Asian restaurants, it’s always Egg Foo Yung or Basil Chicken. At Olive Garden, angel hair pasta with meat sauce and sausage. The Olive Garden is the one place that I will make a change; sometimes I like to try a different sauce. The other day, I went and bought a car food tray; it is pretty cool. I saw one of the food critics using one, and I found one at my favorite deep discounter. Now I can eat in the car with a little tray. I asked DariusCooks to come to Pittsburgh and rate the Black restaurants here. I’ll let you know if he shows up; it should be interesting if he does.
