It seems like the holidays are always rushed by retail displays that go up right after the Fourth of July. As we get older, the months and years seem to fly by, and before you can begin to plan for one holiday, it is here and then gone in a flash. I was just planning a menu for Thanksgiving and at the same time thinking about what Christmas decorations I want to use this year. I was listening to a local morning show, and they were talking about Christmas cards—whether to send or not to send. I used to send out custom-made Christmas cards, and actually, it’s not too late to get them printed at one of the many online companies. There was one year that I did not send out the cards, and a few friends asked me what happened. They said that they always look forward to receiving the card. Bill Fisher (former Taylor Allderdice principal) used to send out letters and give his year in review. I should not say “used to” because I think I got one from him last year. He is 100 years old now, and for him to send out that letter each year just warms my heart. I love maintaining traditions and hope that the older generation will continue to pass down the things we have been doing around the holidays that are so much fun. Getting together with family and friends for big meals, going to light-up night, and decorating the house or your apartment are things that memories are made of. I plan to take off some time from my business to pull out decorations and get the house ready for Christmas. Some will be donated, and I have already told a young family that I am fond of that I’m giving them one of my Christmas trees. Let’s do like the old days and spread holiday cheer.
