The End of 2024 by Debbie Norrell

Does last year seem like yesterday? In a few hours it will be 2025 and last year will be yesterday. I know we all say this but as we get older time seems to fly by. I think it all began when I was in my twenties or thirties, the days of going to school and waiting for summer vacation were gone, we didn’t have mortgages and bills to worry about and time creeped along. We couldn’t wait until we were old enough to drink legally and do the things grown folks do. Those days came and now we want to slow down the clock. The retail stores seem to accelerate the seasons, before you can celebrate one holiday there is a display for a holiday that is 3 months away. I’ m sure you noticed that before the Christmas merchandise went on sale the Valentine displays were up. I don’t know about you, but this rush of holidays takes the fun out of it for me. The Christmas season used to seem so long when I was little. We would look through the catalog and pick out presents and then we would go shopping and show our parents what we wanted. Sometimes we would go downtown and look at the displays in Kaufmann’s windows and then we would start planning for the big day. The tree would go up, the lights would be lit and then the stockings would be hung. Those were fun times, and I guess since we were on the receiving end it prolonged the process. Now that we are grown and on the paying end it makes a big difference. My mom used to quote a friend of hers, they used to say, “before you start figuring for the month the month done gone.” That is so true. By the time you read this it will probably be 2025. Enjoy your year and try to relax and slow it down.
