I recently relocated back to Pittsburgh after living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for several years. The first question I always get is, “Why would you move back here??” The short, uncomplicated answer is that my daughter got accepted into Penn State University, so here we are. Living away from family and friends was hard, so imagine my excitement finding out that there was such a heavy presence of Pittsburgh culture in the Myrtle Beach area! Myrtle Beach does not have a team in the NFL; the Pittsburgh Steelers are their team of choice. I discovered that there are over 20 plus Sports/Steeler bars currently celebrating the Steelers, as well as the Pirates and the Penguins.
KING STREET GRILLE
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting at least 7-10 of the spots over the years living there. My brother, who also lives in Myrtle Beach, introduced them to me in his quest to always support the Pittsburgh teams. His favorite is King Street Grille, an upscale sports bar offering an outdoor patio and exquisite dining choices.
They have a variety of Menu options, Mussels and all! The Seafood in Myrtle Beach is the best I’ve ever had. The quality is perfect, and the price is right!
SPENCER’Z SPORTS BAR
One of my favorite places to watch a Steeler game in Myrtle Beach is a sports bar called Spencer’z. We would also enjoy karaoke here on Wednesday nights! Spencer’z gave me the vibe of watching the game at the Galaxy Lounge in Homewood, PA. With their 26 flat screens, pool tables, and delicious food and music! Steeler fans rave about their wings and Philly cheesesteaks. One fan even said the cheesesteaks taste better here than some she has had in Philadelphia, PA! After the games, there is always a turn-up that you wouldn’t believe, especially if the Steelers won! Steeler fans always unite, and I always felt like a celebrity in the house since I am originally from Pittsburgh.
BLITZBURGH SPORTS BAR & GRILL
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the bar manager of Blitzburgh Sports Bar & Grill, Frank Krutkowski. Originally from Poland with ties to the Wilkes Barre, PA area, he was really excited to speak with me! The owners of the bar are from Wexford, PA, and are now living in the Myrtle Beach area. Blitzburgh is located in Murrells Inlet, another suburb of Myrtle Beach, (Imagine driving on 376 from Swissvale to Monroeville).
Debi Lucas (SP): What made the owners decide to open a Pittsburgh-themed bar in the Myrtle Beach area?
Frank Krutkowski: There were a lot of Pittsburgh Steeler bars already in the area, but the owners wanted to make it a complete Pittsburgh experience, so they showcase all Pittsburgh Sports teams!
Debi: Are there a lot of patrons that come from “up North” that come to watch the Steeler games?
Frank: Yes, indeed! We also have many locals that are diehard Steeler fans as well!
Debi: What has the vibe been like, taking into consideration the Steelers’ current standing of 1-4?
Frank: The enthusiasm is still there, and the fans remain hopeful! We are watching quarterback Kenny Pickett with high hopes! Either way, you definitely need to be here at 11 am for a 1 pm Sunday game to get a seat!
Debi: What are some of the fan favorites from your Menu?
Frank: The Blitzburgh has a great menu full of fan favorites and drink specials. The most popular being the Pittsburgh Steak salad ( with fries, of course) and the Blitzburgh Burger, hand-pattied and topped with coleslaw and fries! Sound familiar??
Frank is confident that the Steelers will turn the season around, and that, my friends, is a true indication of a diehard Steeler fan! The next time you find yourself in the Myrtle Beach area, stop past and enjoy the Pittsburgh city vibez at Blitzburgh Sports Bar & Grill, located at 3100 US-17 BUS Unit B, Murrells Inlet, SC (843-299-2104)
