“Give roses while they can smell them,” is a popular phrase, and last weekend I experienced several events where roses were given to the living in various forms. One that stands out was a Conversation with HazelJackson. This afternoon event was done in the format of a talk with Hazel on the stage of Sumpter Hall at St. James AME Church. I was the facilitator. There was music, food, and tributes from friends from all areas of her life; even her former massage therapist came with roses in hand and spoke about what a delight it was to have Hazel Jackson as a patient.
Former students drove hundreds of miles to tell their stories as well as the former first lady of St. James AME Church. A beautiful bouquet of roses, a gift from her former student sat between us during the conversation and the fragrance was calming. Did you know that the fragrance of flowers can also boost your mood and make you feel more relaxed?
In addition, smelling flowers can improve your concentration and help you focus on tasks at hand. Lastly, smelling flowers is a great way to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. In a recent Facebook post, I suggested that more people should have events like this. A friend of mine even made a suggestion of people she would like to see on the “conversation stage.” As we step into our senior years, I feel it is good to celebrate while you can enjoy the festivities. I recently celebrated my 70th year on earth. The party was organized and paid for by yours truly. Several people told me that they would never give their own party. If I waited for someone else to give me a party, I would never have one. And just a side note Jackson is 80 years of age and she planned and organized her event as well. One friend said he was so glad that we were not at a funeral. I was in total agreement.
