I’m Glad I Bought It by Debbie Norrell

I never need an excuse to shop. To me, shopping is relaxing and fun, and I think I have found some pretty amazing items. From clothing to furniture, I have scored great deals. For instance, I bought a sofa for $250, only to find out it was worth $8,000.

One shopping day that I used to look forward to was Black Friday. If you are not familiar with this National Day of Shopping, it’s the day after Thanksgiving, and in the “old days,” shoppers would rise up out of their beds and get in line outside of big box stores with their chairs and blankets and wait for the store to open. When the doors opened, the crowd would stampede in for the limited amount of bargain items. It was wild.

I remember one Friday I went to Kmart to buy a small freezer for $99. On this particular Friday, the store was fairly empty. Black Friday was losing its shine. The Internet was popular, and Black Friday was being held throughout the year and whenever a business felt like it. “How dare they.”

After I bought the freezer, I looked around for other bargains, and I found myself digging through a pile of DVDs. I have a DVD collection that I think is pretty outstanding: complete seasons of Martin, Girlfriends, and The Beverly Hillbillies. I think this must have been the year when networks were not showing The Cosby Show, and some of us were in mourning, missing the Huxtable family.

Don’t you know I found the complete box set of The Cosby Show in a bin for $5? After the recent death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, I was once again glad that I made that purchase. I know that I could find the series on various streaming networks, but it’s comforting to have my own.

Rest in power, Mr. Warner.
