I just left the grocery store and there were few “human-operated” checkouts to select from. I only had one item, but I refused to go to the self-operated checkout. The reason I am not a fan of the self-serve checkouts is my many years of working in ATM fraud and realizing that the self-serve checks are where skimmers are often placed. I hope you are paying attention to the news. Last month two men were arrested, and they were accused of placing credit card skimmers at several Sam’s Club locations in the Pittsburgh area. The skimmers can be placed very quickly on or in a real device and is typically equipped with Bluetooth to transmit your card information to the thief. The two men arrested are Romanian nationals and according to recent news reports, they cried and are asking to be released. Police were made aware of the skimmer on May 20 after employees discovered it on a self-checkout register. Surveillance footage showed the two men placing the device on May 16. Make sure you check your bank statements for any unauthorized transactions. This is one of the reasons I strongly suggest that you check your account daily.
Unfortunately, you can learn how to place a skimmer via the internet. The device is usually placed on top of the actual card reader. Gas pumps and ATMs are often targeted. The Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities warms that gas pumps further away from the store with little surveillance are most likely to be targeted. If you were shopping at any of the Sam’s locations last month don’t be surprised if you get a new debit card from your bank. If you see any unauthorized charges on your account, contact your bank immediately.
