The Allegheny County Safe Sleep campaign focuses on reducing Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), the leading cause of death among infants aged one month to one year, by educating families and caregivers about safe sleep practices and providing supportive resources.
SUID refers to the sudden and unexplained death of a baby under one year, often linked to accidental suffocation or unsafe sleep environments, and many of these deaths are preventable with proper guidance. At the heart of the campaign are the ABCs of safe sleep:
- Alone (baby sleeps only with a fitted sheet and no other items in the crib),
- Back (baby should always be placed on their back for naps and bedtime)
- Crib (sleep should occur in a safe, dedicated infant sleep space rather than adult beds or couches).
In 2024, local data showed that at least one unsafe sleep factor was involved in nearly all (96%) of the infant sleep-related deaths in the county, with many cases involving unsafe locations such as adult beds or couches and co-sleeping with adults or siblings. To help families make sleep safer, the campaign emphasizes practical steps such as keeping the crib clear of pillows, toys, and blankets; placing the baby on their back for all sleep; encouraging room-sharing but not bed-sharing; choosing a safe and sturdy crib or bassinet; dressing the baby in light, appropriate clothing; returning the infant to their own sleep space after feeding; maintaining a smoke-free and clean environment; and considering protective practices like breastfeeding and the use of a pacifier at sleep time.
Through education, outreach, and resource connections, the campaign aims to empower caregivers with the knowledge and tools they need to protect infants and reduce preventable sleep-related fatalities in the community.
