“My popular foods are pork chops fried and smothered, deep-fried salmon croquettes, candied yams, collard greens, black-eyed peas, green beans, and mac and cheese. The oxtails are a number-one hit, and everything’s Southern-style.” Continue reading

WCDC Spotlight: Karen Denton, KSC Commercial Cleaning Service
September is a significant month for Karen Denton, CEO of KSC Commercial Cleaning Service, headquartered on South Avenue in Wilkinsburg. The 1st commemorates when she started her business, the 7th celebrates her birthday, and September 2002 marks when she had her first of four aneurysms.
“21 years surviving, 13 years in business, and I just turned 63,” said Denton. “The name of my business is KSC, which stands for Karen’s Second Chance. I thought the name of the company was for me, but it was for people like me who need a second chance. Every time I wanted to quit, God gave me more contracts or more people. Whichever one I needed, he provided, so I kept going. Now I know that I’m in my purpose. I think that’s why he saved me, for all the business owners and families that my company helps.” Continue reading

Downtown Pittsburgh Property and Business Owners Want Black Festival Goers Out
Since 2019 Stop the Violence Pittsburgh, lead by B. Marshall, has hosted the annual Soul Food Festival in Downtown Pittsburgh which is a celebration of Black culture and heritage in Pittsburgh.
In a recent notice from Highwoods Properties Ownership Mr. Marshall was informed that Downtown Property and Business Owners would like him to move the Soul Food Festival from PPG Plaza because Black music and attendees are to “noisy” and they cause logistics problems for businesses:
Pittsburgh Soul Food Festival organizer
fighting to keep location from moving
The founder said that the event boosted the economy
for not only vendors but also local businesses.
However, the Owners of PPG Plaza have not demanded that White attendees of other Festival events inside PPG Plaza to leave or relocate to other spaces
This year the Picklesburgh Festival bragged of hosting 200,000 attendees in the same PPG Plaza location.
Marshall is requesting a meeting with Property Owners to resolve this issue and we need you to email: ANDY.WISNIEWSKI@jll.com and raise your concerns about this discriminating actions.

Car and Carriage Museum
The automobile transformed the American landscape, and in doing so, it changed the lives of Black Americans. Two million African Americans courageously fled the South during the first wave of the Great Migration from 1916 to 1945. Pittsburgh neighborhoods like the Hill District became a haven for Black communities to thrive.
Buying a car was one of the first steps many took as they transitioned into the middle class. For Black Americans, buying a car in the mid-20th century was more than a symbol of making it; the automobile provided freedom of mobility.
Pittsburgh and the Great Migration will feature well-known favorites such as the 1914 Ford Model T Touring Car and a 1922 Lincoln Model L. You’ll also step back in time with period costumes and memorabilia.

The WCDC is pleased to announce that it has secured $400,000 in PA Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Funds (PHARE) from the PA Housing Finance Agency to support the Wilkinsburg Vacant Property Recovery Initiative. This initiative grew out of the WCDC and its Strong Neighborhoods Committee’s work, and it represents a collection of efforts and programs that provide funds and resources directly to community members interested in acquiring and rehabilitating vacant properties and/or to making exterior repairs and updates to their homes.
Through programs like the Homeowner Acquisition, Repair, and Preservation (HARP) Program and Vacant Property Recovery Initiative, PHARE funds will specifically support the WCDC’s work to provide financial and/or technical support to residents for:
- much-needed home repairs;
- vacant property acquisition to encourage new homeownership and preservation of Wilkinsburg’s housing stock;
- and wills and estate planning funding to encourage existing homeowners to plan for the future of their property.
This is the third grant provided to the WCDC by PHFA since 2020, totaling $750,000 in support from the agency over the past three years. PHFA’s increasing support of the WCDC shows the effectiveness of the organization’s work and the need to continue addressing Wilkinsburg’s most pressing issues with dedicated, consistent funding to support capacity and program development.
Examples of how these funds have been used to impact the lives of Wilkinsburg residents include:
- 30 applications submitted to acquire vacant properties and/or land have been submitted within the last two years with 12 properties successfully acquired to date.
- 34 Wilkinsburg residents received grants of up to $10,000 in 2022 with 14 home repairs and/or renovations completed in the last year.
- 19 residents have reached out for free legal assistance related to wills and estate planning with 7 completed so far.
- 3 resident-driven neighborhood improvement plans have received technical assistance and funding to support phase one, with more funding planned for subsequent phases. The plans represent a concerted effort to address the vacancy and blight within these three focus areas and are a direct result of the WCDC’s Strong Neighborhoods Committee’s work and the 2022 WCDC Community Vacant Property Strategy.

Milestone Works to Empower Wilkinsburg Community
First founded in 1969, Milestone has been giving back to the Wilkinsburg community for over 50 years.
According to Executive Director Jordan Coughlen, the idea behind Milestone came from parents who wanted to provide deinstitutionalized and community-focused care for children diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD). Since then, however, Milestone has become so much more.
“We have grown from a community-focused IDD day program and residential provider to a multi-faceted, multi-service line agency that provides care to individuals with a mental health diagnosis, substance use disorder, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and those just needing extra care and support in their recovery journey regardless of what they’re dealing with,” Coughlen said.
Milestone has been located in and devoted to the community of Wilkinsburg since it was established. Their first office opened at 712 South Avenue in 1969. Though Milestone may have evolved, their core vision of providing support remains the same.
