Chris Buccini Keynote Speaker at Bisnow’s Pittsburgh State of The Market
In September, BPG Founder Chris Buccini was the keynote speaker, alongside Chairman and CEO of FNB Corporation Vincent J. Delie, Jr., at BisNow’s Pittsburgh State of the Market. Hosted at the 26-story FNB Financial Center in the Lower Hill District, the sold out event brought together industry experts to explore how key projects are shaping the city’s future while addressing critical concerns like sustainability, financing, and development bottlenecks.
During the Keynote Fireside Chat, Buccini and Delie touched on their partnership in developing FNB Corporation’s new headquarters. FNB Financial Center is the first multi-tenant high-rise office building to be constructed in Pittsburgh in decades and features next-generation office space that promotes employee health and well-being. The building will be home to 800 FNB Corporation associates as well as GH Advertising, Cohen Seglias law firm, and BDO accounting firm.
As the workforce has shifted post-COVID, Buccini and Delie were asked how they are getting workers excited about going into the office. Both agreed that a class A workplace environment is the key factor to getting associates to be in the office, and on-site amenities are at the helm of creating a space where people want to work. The 500,000 SF FNB Financial Center features an on-site café which can sit up to 100 people and a tenant-exclusive amenity floor with a fitness center, outdoor terrace, kitchenette, and fully-connected conference rooms. The networking portion of the BisNow event was hosted in the 15,000 SF amenity suite and showcased the space not only as a collaborative meeting area, but also as a location for company-wide gatherings.
When asked about the greater impact the building will have the on city, Buccini discussed the community reinvestment the development has brought to Pittsburgh. The $300 million project delivered over $50 million of community reinvestment with “40% of all contracts awarded to minority and women-owned business.” What Buccini is the most proud of is the time spent by the development team to ensure an impactful reinvestment into the Historic Hill District.

Legendary Singer-Songwriter Betty Davis Laid to Rest in Homestead, PA
In a quiet and intimate ceremony, the remains of legendary singer-songwriter Betty Mabry Davis (July 26, 1945 – February 9, 2022) were laid to rest in her hometown of Homestead, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Davis, known for her bold influence in the music world, spent her final years in a senior apartment complex near her burial site. With the recent closing of her estate, her remaining ashes were interred at Homestead Cemetery. Fulfilling her final wishes, some of her ashes had previously been scattered over Japan’s Mt. Fuji earlier this year.
Betty Davis is honored in Homestead with a mural in the popular Waterfront shopping district, located on the site of the former Homestead Steel Mill where her father worked after their family moved to the area. Her grave, in Section L-Annex, overlooks the community she cherished throughout her life.
The private burial ceremony was witnessed by family and friends, along with Mike Canton, host of The Soul Show, who was invited to document the event. If you are interested in previous documentation on Betty’s life, you can find it on Mike Canton’s website here: https://soulshowmike.org/2024/10/03/a-resting-betty-davis/

WCDC News | Guarding the Past, Securing the Future: Deb Rose’s Wilkinsburg Legacy
In 2002, Deb Rose faced a familiar challenge in Wilkinsburg—she couldn’t secure a bank loan. For nine years, Rose rented an apartment at the corner of Whitney Avenue and Center Street, where the sounds of Motown, courtesy of Miss Lorna’s porch speakers, filled Sunday mornings. Despite the neighborhood’s rough reputation, Rose fell in love with Hamnett Place and knew she wanted to stay.
Across from her apartment stood a Queen Anne Victorian with a wraparound porch, a property Rose had admired since moving to the neighborhood in 1994. When one of the owners passed away, her husband agreed to sell it to Rose. However, Wilkinsburg was a redlined district, making traditional financing impossible. Determined, Rose turned to Dwelling House Savings and Loan, a Black-owned institution in the Hill District, which helped her purchase the house in 2003.
Twenty-one years later, Rose still calls the Victorian home, having converted it into two apartments. She lives downstairs, renting out the upstairs unit, and continually works on improvements, including a new back porch funded by the WCDC’s HARP Program. Additionally, Rose recently crafted a will through the WCDC’s free wills program to ensure her beloved home remains in the hands of someone who cherishes it as much as she does. Her will also aims to protect the neighborhood from predatory developers.

Wilkinsburg Business Spotlight: Vickey’s Soul Grill
The Pittsburgh region isn’t known for its Southern-style cooking, but Vickey Giddens of Vickey’s Soul Grill is going to change that.
“My family is from Crystal Springs, Mississippi, and my father was a chef,” says Giddens. “When I was 6 years old, I watched my father, and I let that be my dream, to be a chef like my dad.”
Today, Giddens has two Vickey’s Soul Grill locations: one at 655 Rodi Road and the other in Wilkinsburg at 807 Wallace Avenue in the Hosanna House. Both offer a menu of items that will make your mouth water.
“My popular foods are pork chops fried and smothered, deep-fried salmon croquettes, candied yams, collard greens, black-eyed peas, green beans, and mac and cheese. The oxtails are a number-one hit, and everything’s Southern-style.” Continue reading
