The Soul Pitt Crew hung out at Darcy’s Cafe, AAMI’s 25th Birthday bash and stopped in to check out the poetry event put on byBonita Lee Penn and The Minority Networking Exchange. The food was good at Darcy’s – she has a nice spot over there in Duquense and the most important thing is that the food will make you keep coming back! AAMI’s birthday bash was packed – kids, food, music, more music and good soulful fun. 25 years is a big accomplishment – way to go AAMI! Bonita and the MNE threw a nice event at Amani International Coffeehouse and Café, owned by Terra Jones. All the readers were inspiring and we even got some networking in. Sheila Beasley blessed us with an a cappella gospel song that was divine. Don’t take my word for all of this – check out the pics!

1st African-American Leadership Summit Review by Donna M. Baxter The African-American Leadership Association’s 1st African-American leadership summit was such a beautiful event! Held on June 4, 2009 in the IBEW/Circuit Center on the Southside, the ballroom quickly filled up with folks and by 9am tables were full and we were ready with anticipation to learn from great leaders in our community. Rev. Dr. William H. Curtis from Mt. Ararat Baptist Church gave an inspirational morning keynote geared for those wanting to become leaders or already in leadership roles. He covered five important points about leadership. He last point was “remember as you rise, to scratch out time to enjoy your life”, and Esther Bush, President and CEO of the Urban League of Pittsburgh, added during the Q&A to also remember to “take care of your health”. Even though it’s something we all know, it something a lot of us forget to practice! Although I had to leave to teach a workshop at Duquense, I was glad I got to be a sponsor and also experience some of the summit and will definitely be there next year!Click here to take a peek at the photos taken during the morning session….I think I’ll go out and enjoy the rest of this beautiful day!
The Mt. Ararat Baptist Church “Entrepreneurs for Christ” Holiday Party took place on Dec 7, 2007 at the Exclusive Montage Interior Design Studio. Montage’s setting has different room layouts and themes all throughout two huge rooms on the top floor of a secluded warehouse. Asian, Moroccan, and African themes are all throughout the place. Entertainment included a saxophone solo, vocalist, dance group and fashion show. Networking took place all night and various entrepreneurs had a chance to get on the mic and pitch their businesses. A peaceful and relaxing setting, beautiful Christian people and positive networking made this event one of Soul Pitt’s favorites this year. Props to the people at Mt Ararat for a great event and to Vernard from The Minority Networking Exchange, Inc. for inviting Soul Pitt to come on out. Click here for the pics
My dog (pure breed English Mastiff), who is huge, likes to stand on his hind legs (he’s 6’2 when he does this) and just look up and down the street. People think it’s a person til they look closer. They always do a double-take – it’s hilarious and he’s been doing this for three years.

The shopping party at Accezzorize on May 16, 2009 was HOT! Owner Alexis Alexander has the store hooked up really nice. Ladies enjoyed shopping, manicures, airbrush tattoos, food, drinks, fantasy makeup applications and an overall great networking opportunity as well. Soul Sis will definitely be back to get some more jewelry because it is very unique. She only buys a few of each piece. Kudos to Alexis for a great presentation! Don’t take our word for it…Check out the pics!
Soul Pitt’s Meet the Authors event was a big success! We had a great turnout and have already started working on a new lineup of authors to do it again before the year is out. We had authors from Pittsburgh, Florida, and DC. The food by Lissi’s Catering was off the chain and also the food made by Juelle Hall. If you weren’t there, you missed one of Pittsburgh’s most unique events. If interested to be on the Authors list for next time please email Bonita at writers@thesoulpitt.com — Now click here for the pics!
I called this photo “Foggy Sunrise” for obvious reasons. I took this photo in Mckeesport one morning on my way to catch my bus on my way to a photo assignment downtown. This photo was taken around 6:30am. Looks like I was in some far away land when I took this photo….LOL… You would be amazed and would not believe them if you seen some more of my photos.
This photo I just happened to stumble on while I was going to catch my bus on Thanksgiving Day one end of the Rainbow started or ended at Pitt University and started or ended behind the museum on CMU. So no matter how you look at it “THE POT OF GOLD” at the end of the rainbow is filled with education… That is why I called this photograph “POT OF EDUCATION”. Maybe not all but a lot of the fortunes have only come about by what we have learned and the knowledge we have gathered. So go out and get yours while you can!!!

Before Yolanda Adams performed, Bev Smith spoke to the crowd at the Women’s Walk for Peace on Saturday Oct 3, 2009. Bev told the crowd of Pittsburghers that we are too silent as a Black community and how our Women need to get it together and how we need to start supporting Black businesses. Of course she broke it down to the crowd the way Bev Smith knows how to do! What, you don’t know? You’d better click here to play the video!
