The Teacher Academy Residency

Teacher quality is the single most important school-based factor influencing student achievement, surpassing class size, socio-economic status and other variables.  Pittsburgh Public Schools has recently created a new Teacher Academy program (The Teacher Academy Residency) to bring and prepare new highly effective teachers in the district.

The Teacher Academy Residency is a highly-competitive, innovative path for talented professionals, recent college graduates and certified teachers to make a measurable difference in Pittsburgh Public Schools.  Resident Teachers will enter The Teacher Academy and earn a full-time salary and benefits while teaching side-by-side with Master Teachers at Pittsburgh Public Schools.  Also, through this program, we hope to increase the number of minority teachers within the teaching staff at Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Resident Teachers in The Teacher Academy Residency will:

  • Attend a pre-service training institute and induction
  • Earn a full-time salary as a Resident Teacher while earning a dual teacher certification in special education and science, math or English. Opportunities also exist for certified general education teachers to earn an additional certification in special education
