Popie Redd’s BBQ | By Chardaé Jones

Popie Redd’s BBQ opened in November 2021 in Braddock Hills (270 Yost Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15221 | (412) 723-2251) and was met with great fanfare. That first day they operated on a limited menu, but today they are limited no more. Their menu features BBQ delectable from pork and beef ribs to fried and grilled chicken. They even have subs, sandwiches, and wings. I like the variety of their menu as getting the same thing every time is a choice.

I settled for the chicken, mac and cheese, and collard greens. The chicken was fall off the bone delicious and packed with seasonings. You can choose to get yours bathed in sauce, but I opted for the sauce on the side as I wanted to taste the chicken by its lonesome first. The wings may have been small, but they packed a punch when it came to smokiness and flavor. I felt like there was no way this gem was in Braddock Hills. The mac and cheese tasted like comfort food heaven and it was well balanced and simplistic as mac and cheese stands for itself if you do it right. The collards had no meat in them as I can’t eat pork, so I was excited to taste them. I need the recipe on whatever seasoning is in them because they taste like they were sitting in seasoning all day. I got a chicken platter that came with six wings and two sides for less than fifteen dollars and I will be back because that is well worth the money spent.

The customer service was absolutely superb as this is a family-owned business. They even put the teenagers to work and it’s a good feeling to see a family working together to feed the community. I can feel the hard work that went into opening a barbecue spot during the pandemic. They definitely bring the family atmosphere, and they got the sauce. Judging by the number of sauce options there’s something for everyone. Don’t sleep this gem tucked away in Braddock Hills Shopping Center as it may have had a limited offering to begin it’s made up for it with a full menu that tastes like southern soul food and home-cooked heaven. Do call before you show up though as their hours can be a bit sporadic. I hope for the New Year that with the full menu comes the full hours.
