The weighted hem prevents \u201cwardrobe malfunctions.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ideas at the second annual PITTch Fest ranged from functional fashion and thermal-powered cellphone chargers to an innovative brace to help patients with Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it was a new approach to wrist support that took the top prize in the contest\u2019s proficient category. The judged contest for regional entrepreneurs to pitch their ideas wrapped up the 25th annual Showcase for Commerce on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Wrivo LLC\u2019s Wristocat won $3,000 in funding to create a polished prototype to take to market.<\/p>\n<p>David Luciew, a Johnstown design professional who developed the product with his wife, Michele, while he was recovering from surgery to correct carpal tunnel syndrome, focused his pitches on building a better mousetrap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our life and livelihood relying on ability to use a computer, the mouse giving us the most problem is sitting right there on our desk,\u201d he told judges in the Stars and Stripes room at the Cambria County War Memorial.<\/p>\n<p>The one-size-fits all product would work with a mouse, keyboard or any other computer input that requires hands.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Donna Michele Baxter, CEO and founder of Soul Pitt Media, said she liked the \u201csleekness\u201d of the design she watched in Luciew\u2019s marketing video.<br \/>\n\u201cIt looks like an Apple product,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s definitely sexy.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the student category, Healthponics won the top prize, $3,000, to create sustainable, indoor plant-growing systems that can be app-regulated to adjust to elements such as pH and temperature.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9546\" style=\"width: 606px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thesoulpitt.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pittchfesthealth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9546\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9546\" title=\"pittchfesthealth\" src=\"http:\/\/thesoulpitt.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pittchfesthealth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesoulpitt.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pittchfesthealth.jpg 760w, https:\/\/thesoulpitt.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/pittchfesthealth-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Troy Schall (left) and Drew Colvin talk about \u201cHealthponics,\u201d growing without soil. They won first place in the student category at PITTch Fest on Friday.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Target markets would include restaurant industries, people who live in condominiums or other arrangements where outdoor gardening is tricky or for medical marijuana, Troy Schall said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can regulate it yourself from your phone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of area sponsors such as Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, startups took home $10,000 total in awards.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event also included $10,000 in audience favorite awards through a sponsorship from GapVax.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Eric Silver, a Silicon Valley native and principal at Alt-Capital, said he enjoyed the ideas and they reflect a city that is beginning to foster entrepreneurial growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were a lot of things that seem like they would work,\u201d he said. \u201cFor a judge trained to search for what won\u2019t work in a potential idea, that\u2019s saying something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kecia Bal is a reporter for The Tribune-Democrat.
