I recently attended the ceremony honoring the new hall of fame members at Taylor Allderdice High School in Squirrel Hill, the school is now known as Pittsburgh Allderdice High School. I graduated from Taylor Allderdice in 1970 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013. Each year I receive an invitation to attend the induction ceremony, but this was the first time that I have attended since I was inducted. It was a great evening, and it felt good to be back in my old high school. The ceremony was held in the auditorium. Above the stage appears the school moto “know something, do something, be something.” That motto has always stuck with me and I’m sure that was the intent of whoever decided to place the motto so strategically. The recent inductees were a testament to it. The list included: Gregory A. Morris, PhD (class of 1955) expert in reading instruction and civic leader, Mitchell J. Weiss, MD, PhD (class of 1975) renowned physician-scientist who studies blood cell development and treats children with hematologic diseases, Ronald H. Spector, PhD (class of 1960) award winning author, scholar and teacher of modern military history, Fred Rubin, MD (class of 1967) pioneer in geriatric medicine and local champion for improving the health of seniors and Lia Epperson, JD (class of 1989) internationally recognized constitutional law, civil rights and education policy scholar and litigator. It was heart warming to hear their stories and all except Ronald Spector was there in person to accept their plaque. Dr. Spector passed away a few months ago. If you have the opportunity to attend an event or do something you have not done, do it, and if its free jump at the opportunity.

Email the columnist at debbienorrell@aol.com

Click Here to View All “Lifestyles with Debbie Norrell” Articles

If you are reading that title and think I’m talking about going up in a hot air balloon or driving a race car, I’m not that daring.
