In some cases, the menu has been limited and I have received a paper menu (throw away), or the menu is on a QR code, and I have been required to scan the code with my phone. The latter is not my favorite thing to do. A few eating places have not reopened due to a lack of staff. That part is still confusing to me. Before my retirement not working was not an option. It was either work or not eat and not have a roof over my head. Believe it or not, I am still cashing in on birthday dinners and last week I went out for a birthday dinner with friends. I wanted to patronize a Black-owned restaurant. I called them ahead of time to see if we needed reservations, they called me back and told me that reservations were not needed. We got cute and headed to the restaurant. This was not our first time visiting this location. When we walked in, we were told that we could order from the menu and eat in the restaurant, but our food would be in take-out boxes. I was stunned and somewhat confused. Should we leave and go somewhere else or stay and hope for the best. You guessed it since I was the “person being celebrated” I made the decision to stay. We sat down and received our water in Styrofoam cups. Shortly thereafter our food arrived. It arrived so quickly I believe it was already prepared. We received plastic knives and forks that were not sturdy enough to cut our entrée. I was so disappointed. I asked the person that appeared to be in charge what was going on. He explained to me that they could not get qualified help to serve, prepare the food and wash dishes. So here is the question what would you have done? Would you go back, would you write the owner or just forget it? I can’t wait to read your reply.

Email the columnist at debbienorrell@aol.com

Click Here to View All “Lifestyles with Debbie Norrell” Articles

During the last year, I have been going to restaurants that are open and for the most part, I have had a good experience.
