I feel if there is any year to celebrate doctors it should be this year and of course last year. Recently, I received a letter from my surgeon’s office informing me that she is no longer going to be available. I was heartbroken. She was young, had a great bedside manner and she performed my recent breast cancer surgery. As far as surgery goes, she did a great job and the follow-up visits have been great. I felt this same way about my medical oncologist. I was one of his last patients before he retired, he was a very pleasant person, as well. Fortunately, his replacement is just as nice. I guess I am getting to that age where my doctors are retiring because many are around my age or a little older. I found a great dentist on Angie’s List and after 2 visits he retired. Fortunately, he transferred his practice to another dentist in the same building equally as nice. I have always thought it is good to maintain a good relationship with your doctor. Keep your scheduled appointments, go in with a list of your concerns, and if you are on medication take it as prescribed. National Doctor’s Day is held every year on March 30th in the United States. It is a day to celebrate the contribution of physicians who serve our country by caring for its citizens. The first Doctor’s Day observance was March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors’ Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctor’s Day. Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30th as “National Doctor’s Day.”

Email the columnist at debbienorrell@aol.com

Click Here to View All “Lifestyles with Debbie Norrell” Articles

For more information on POISE Foundation
Please visit www.PoiseFoundation.org

On March 30, National Doctor’s Day was celebrated.
