Internships at Duquesne University exposed him to Corporate America, he then <\/span><span class=\"tx\">realized he wanted to be the boss.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"tx\">I had to learn the mechanics of running a business: the key <\/span><span class=\"tx\">aspects of assessing business risk, understanding supply and demand, target marketing, team <\/span><span class=\"tx\">building and raising capital gave me the ability and confidence I needed.<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jordan was contacted by Dr. Omar Reid, a clinical psychologist, who operates several mental <\/span><span class=\"tx\">health clinics in Boston. They both agreed with the poverty and discrimination in Pittsburgh a <\/span><span class=\"tx\">clinic with a cultural focus was needed. \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">Jordan says, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"tx\">I began the process to execute a plan to <\/span><span class=\"tx\">meet the market needs. It took two years and hundreds of thousands of dollars before we opened. <\/span><span class=\"tx\">We needed the exact talent to assist with policies\/procedure manuals, credentialing with <\/span><span class=\"tx\">insurance companies, Medicaid, meetings with government officials, etc.<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span> <span class=\"tx\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The goal is to help individuals, families and ultimately the community to focus and live <\/span><span class=\"tx\">productive lives. ABS provides outpatient mental health, psychiatric, drug and alcohol abuse <\/span><span class=\"tx\">services, and psychotherapy counseling services for children\/adults experiencing behavioral <\/span><span class=\"tx\">challenges and acute mental illnesses. <\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201cC<\/span><span class=\"tx\">ultural competence is our philosophy,<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201d<\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0says Jordan.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"tx\">African American culture is unique, <\/span><span class=\"tx\">throughout our transit<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">ion in American society we\u2019ve\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">had to overcome obstacles and barriers that <\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">others haven\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0endured. Our family customs, norms and language are unique to us.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">It\u2019s the <\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">understanding of \u2018<\/span><span class=\"tx\">living in our skin<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0that provides ABS the insight to assist our people. That sets <\/span><span class=\"tx\">us apart. You cannot learn that in a classroom or a book<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">.\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"tx\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">Why a \u2018for<\/span><span class=\"tx\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">profit\u2019 establishment<\/span><span class=\"tx\">?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201cM<\/span><span class=\"tx\">oney, we want to make money. We want the market <\/span><span class=\"tx\">share. We are intentional in this. ABS is a corporation, we have a professional culture that <\/span><span class=\"tx\">mimics corporate yet we maintain the spirit and feel of a not-for-profit. You can start a non-<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">profit but you don\u2019t own it<\/span><span class=\"tx\">. You cannot Will a non-profit to your heirs. Therefore, no wealth can <\/span><span class=\"tx\">be passed to the next generation,<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx\">says Jordan. <\/span><span class=\"tx\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Understanding this society is about wealth accumulation, Jordan is confident ABS could be a <\/span><span class=\"tx\">model for African American entrepreneurs to recognize how to generate wealth.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"tx\">We should <\/span><span class=\"tx\">learn to be on the giving side of philanthropy. I<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"tx\">ve been fortunate to have worked in both <\/span><span class=\"tx\">environments and understand the difference in not only the cultures associated with each but also <\/span><span class=\"tx\">the mindsets.<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"tx\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ABS maintains three facilities: East Liberty, Edgewood Town Center and Aliquippa <\/span><span class=\"tx\">(December 2016). Opportunities to acquire\/merge with healthcare businesses and <\/span><span class=\"tx\">franchising\/licensing are possibilities. Jordan declares,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"tx f48\">\u201cI don\u2019t have the need to say I own my <\/span><span class=\"tx\">own business. I want to generate wealth.
