Johnstown Spotlight: Andres Taylor and Dr. George Pueblitz Presents “Bulldog Arena”

The streets of downtown Johnstown were once known as the bustling streets of the city with its many storefronts and steady flow of traffic.

These days, things appear a little differently as you walk through the city’s downtown area, but Dr. George Pueblitz and former Pennsylvania Golden Gloves State Champion Andres Taylor believe that things are about to change in downtown Johnstown.

 

“We want to bring traffic to the downtown businesses,” Taylor said. “This is going to be a great thing, for not just us, but the entire downtown.” Continue reading

Community Advocate Mycaiah Camile | KidsKardio, Big Ideas for Little Lives

One prominent question that busy parents ask is: what and where are the available activities for my children?   In today’s health conscious climate, parents are not only in search of fun activities, but ones that build healthy minds.

The answer comes pertains, specifically, to Mycaiah Camile, a New Kensington native. She founded her community project KidsKardio, Inc. in 2012 with a goal is to deliver positive action and entertainment to the youth in the New Kensington-Arnold area.

KidsKardio is a playful activity-based program conducted and supervised by Mycaiah. The activities take place in various parks around the New Kensington-Arnold area. Her brand ‘Big Ideas for Little Lives’ is her inspiration.    Continue reading

Success Stories from the Ward Home

Jamee-Alaeylah Dany’le Garth-Flemister is a senior at Propel Andrew Street High School in Munhall. She is also involved in the Ward Home’s Supervised Independent Living Program (S.I.L.).  The S.I.L. program is a 24-hour supervised community-based residential program which serves teens (16-21) in apartment style housing.  The residential program assists teens who are in transition from the social services system to adult life.

The Ward Home was established in 1905 as a safe haven for children. The S.I.L. program includes emphasis on the development of life skills, fiscal responsibility, home economic skills, workforce development, interpersonal skills, social and cultural awareness along with higher education initiatives.

About four years ago the Ward Home networked with local artists/centers to establish enrichment workshops. These workshops offer the opportunity for the teens to relax and explore their creative side. “This is our way to connect deeper with the teens to help them discover a passion, a hobby, some have even discovered a career path,” Daryl Lucke, Ward Homes’ Executive Director, commented.   Continue reading

Johnstown Spotlight: Black Lives Matter

In light of the recent tragedies and marches engulfing the Country, I wanted to take a moment to speak on the inequality and injustice that you can find in any neighborhood.  This article isn’t my typical piece, only because it’s not about someone I know; it’s about someone you know.  We are all human beings, yet time and time again we have been given clear examples of how the “majority” still rules.  As the black community is making strides to better itself, African-Americans are being forced to believe that their lives have no value.  With the steadily increasing number of Blacks dying by the hands of police officers, tension continues to build across the Country, and the nation finds itself in what I believe to be this generation’s civil rights movement. The City of Pittsburgh is experiencing another major economic Renaissance of rebirth and renewal. The City falls in line with many U.S. urban communities in gentrification and revitalization, such as Washington D.C., Brooklyn and Harlem. It is the dawn of economic abundant in our communities when it comes to opportunities for construction companies. One such company Ma’at Construction Group, located in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood, has been selected by Bridgeway Capital as the General Contractor for the first stage of the 7800 Susquehanna Street project.

A participant in marches, rallies and protests since 2004, Nazura Asaseyeduru is living out her life purpose as a social worker focusing on community organizing.  “I love uniting our people and bringing a sense of urgency to community work.”  Asaseyeduru explains, “The community constantly needs improved; it will take all of us to contribute, contributions such as serving disadvantaged people with food and clothes on the corner of Frankstown and N. Homewood Avenue; marching down the street not for a cause but to celebrate the legacy of Black people living in Pittsburgh; I am fulfilled by serving the community in this capacity.” Continue reading

When I first heard about this enterprising ten year-old I thought, “How adorable!”  More often than not, tweens and teens want to do for themselves as soon as possible. Their quest for independence sometime involves earning their own money to do with as they like. Such as the case with fifth-grader who is building her brand, one batch at a time. And it doesn’t hurt that she is absolutely adorable and cute as a button!
