Heinz Endowments Funds Local HBCU Organization

The significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities is reflected daily in the everyday workings of society. From the Vice President of theUnited States to educators, dentists, and physicians and over half of African American professionals are graduates of HBCUs.

In efforts to continue exposing and connecting youth of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan region to the viable higher education opportunities provided by HBCUs, the Heinz Endowments has awarded $50,000 to the Western Pennsylvania Council of HBCU Alumni. “This is exciting because the funding will fuel the Council’s efforts to ensure that HBCUs are presented to our youth as an option for higher education and not excluded, as previously done,” explained Vince Elliott founder and president of the Western PA Council of HBCU Alumni. Based in Pittsburgh, the Council is designed to promote the scholarship, legacy, and tradition of the nation’s HBCUs through active community engagement, student recruitment, and the promotion of academic success and college completion throughout western Pennsylvania. Projects include hosting the HBCU College Fair, the HBCU Family Reunion Cookout, and Student Sendoff, HBCU College bus tours, and campus visitations. Continue reading

Pittsburgh Pastor Receives Top Grant at the First EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator™ Faith-Based

Pastor Cynthia Wallace

The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, announced the top awardees of its first-ever EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator™ Faith-Based hosted by the Eastern States region. The first-place grant of $50,000 was awarded to Pastor Cynthia Wallace of Bible Center Church in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for their work aimed at addressing food access and insecurity through innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit.

“This American Heart Association grant will help us to work with urban farmers in our community to develop their business models. We want them to be able to have thriving businesses that not only support them with income but also will provide produce to our community,” said Pastor Cynthia Wallace. “Our community is not waiting for others to come in and do this work for us. We are going to roll up our sleeves, get our hands dirty and address food access issues.”

According to Pastor Wallace, Bible Center has been in Homewood since 1956 and has been working to address issues related to education, employment, and entrepreneurship for decades. In 2016, the Center started a farm and fishery to provide fresh produce to the community. In 2020, they worked to collaborate with four other urban farms to host a weekend farm stand. POISE Foundation | Celebrating 40 Years of POISE Philanthropy in the Black Community

POISE Foundation has plenty of reasons to celebrate! This is its 40th year as a community foundation focused on inspiring and empowering African Americans. To commemorate this milestone year, the foundation has planned a series of online community conversations and events designed to bring greater awareness to the need for Black Philanthropy and the need to strengthen Black families and their communities.

Preliminary Event Schedule for 2021:

  • May 13 – The Cousins Event
  • June 24 – Community Conversation: Economic Justice
  • July 8 – Scholarship Celebration
  • August – Black Philanthropy Month Community Conversation: Why Do I Give?
  • June – Community Conversation
  • September – Community Conversation: Education
  • October – Grantee Spotlight
  • November – Community Conversation: Mental Health
  • December – Year End Event

“In the midst of a pandemic, the POISE Foundation has positioned itself to thrive and make even greater investments in the Black community. For example, we successfully launched a Critical Community Needs Fund which supports small to mid-side Black Led organizations helping to sustain our community during the crises of Covid-19 and anti-Black violence. This has resulted in awarding more than $1 million to these local organizations. This is one of the many reasons we are celebrating,” says Greg Spencer, Chair of the Board of Trustees, POISE Foundation. Continue reading

Announcing POISE Foundation’s Year End Appeal

2020 has been an incredible year for POISE – full of challenges and successes – and we are contacting you today to help us finish it on a high note.

In addition to our normal grantmaking, in April, we launched the Critical Community Needs Fund (CCNF) that has raised over $1.1 Million so far and pushed out $982,000 in grants to 94 local Black Led Organizations that are serving the most vulnerable members of the Black Community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of our grantees have told us that they might not have been able to survive the difficulties posed by the Coronavirus if it hadn’t been for POISE’s critical and timely support.

In 2021, POISE Foundation will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary. Our mission is to assist the Black Community in achieving self-sustaining practices through strategic leadership, collective giving, grantmaking and advocacy. To continue our work now and for the next 40 years, we need your support. When you give to POISE, you can be assured that your contributions are going directly to support our local Black Community.

Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 by the end of the year and we have made it very easy for you to donate by visiting the link below:

POISE Foundation Announces Human Equity and Justice Fund and Opens Up Grantmaking Program in Celebration of Black Philanthropy Month 2020

BACKGROUND

In mid-June, POISE Foundation’s CEO joined over 60 Black Foundation CEOs representing foundations throughout the country endorsing a set of imperatives requesting action by Philanthropy on Anti-Black Racism outlined in a statement released by the Association of Black Foundation Executives (ABFE).  This statement includes this powerful opening declaration: “While COVID-19 is novel as a virus, the pestilence of anti-Black racism that dictates its disproportionate impact on Black communities is centuries old. Few things drive this point home more poignantly than the massive protests sparked by the recent killing of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Tony McDade at the hands of the police and white vigilantes. The inability to breathe for Black people stricken with COVID-19 and George Floyd’s last breaths being stolen from him by a white police officer’s knee on his neck are profoundly painful symbols of the intersecting threats to Black life caused by the ubiquitous plague of anti-Black racism.”

In the last several weeks, POISE has been approached by a number of Black-Led Organizations, Activists, and individuals inquiring if the Foundation has a Fund that supports Black social justice and equity efforts in light of current events concerning police violence, social injustice and systemic anti-Black racism.   Continue reading

COVID-19 Cancels the Historic Fairview Park Fundraiser and Calls for the Community to Help this Park with Roots Deep in African-American History

By Marcia Liggett

Historic Fairview Park (HFP) is continuing its year-long 75th anniversary celebration and fundraising campaign. Current board president Anita Jackson Lowe, affectionately known as Ms. Anita explained that the second part of the intense fundraising effort, the Black Diamond Gala 1945 May Day Affair scheduled for May 16, 2020 unfortunately was cancelled due to the COVID-19 (Corona Virus) outbreak. May Day Affairs had been the parks biggest fundraisers during its heyday. Famed African American Pittsburgh photographer Teeny Harris was among attendees and photographed many of the HFP events. POISE Foundation Announces New Fund in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic

PITTSBURGH, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Today, POISE Foundation announced the creation of a new fund to provide support to small and mid-sized Black Led Organizations (BLOs) responding to critical needs in the Black community resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Critical Community Needs Fund (CCNF) will provide grants between $5,000 and $25,000 to small and mid-sized BLOs that serve the most vulnerable members of the Black community in the Pittsburgh region.  Interested applicants are encouraged to visit http://poisefoundation.org/ccnf for application instructions and more information.

Mark S. Lewis, President and CEO of POISE Foundation commented: “As we have seen across the nation, the Coronavirus has had a devastating impact on communities of color, and in particular the Black community. We have also seen that many of our small to mid-sized Black led organizations and businesses have been left out or left behind from accessing many of the government relief programs.  These are often the very organizations that are nimble, cost effective and have deep and intimate relationships with the people they serve.   It is our hope that this fund will assist many of these organizations to continue their care for our community.”  Continue reading

Community Leaders and Industry Experts Volunteer for PA COVID-19 Small and Small Diverse Business and Community Taskforce

Taskforce engages small businesses, aids community members

As the COVID-19 epidemic continues to shutter businesses and endanger vulnerable populations, business and civic leaders throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have pooled their expertise to form the COVID-19 Small and Small Diverse Business and Community Taskforce (2SDB&C Taskforce). The 2SDB&C Taskforce was organized to facilitate opportunities for small and small minority-owned businesses to work with state, local and federal government in providing aid to local communities with a focus on the most underrepresented and affected members such as elderly, disabled, economically disadvantaged and homeless Pennsylvanians.

The Taskforce will work with small business that offer a wide range of contract services, including the construction of medical facilities, cleaning and sterilization, environmental testing, security, provision of emergency supplies, food distribution, and housing assistance. In addition to contract work, 2SDB&C Taskforce volunteers will assist businesses with applications for disaster relief loans, recovery planning, and training. By channeling the skills of diverse small businesses into disaster relief efforts, the 2SDB&C Taskforce will position the businesses for a strong recovery in the post-COVID economy, build resilience in Pennsylvania communities, and to create and retain jobs during and after this pandemic. Weinstein Publishes Restaurant Resource as Guide for Residents, to Promote Local Businesses

Allegheny County Treasurer John K. Weinstein on Friday published a database of restaurants providing takeout, curbside pickup, and delivery offerings during the current public health emergency. The guide, organized by municipality, is provided in an effort to help inform residents of available food and dining options as well as encourage support for local businesses. It is available on the Treasurer’s Office website – www.AlleghenyCountyTreasurer.us  – and will continue to be updated on a regular basis.

“In difficult times the small things can go a long way,” said Treasurer Weinstein. “It’s so incrediblyimportant that we all do everything we can to minimize person-to-person interactions and reduce the spread of coronavirus. That kind of disruption to our normal lives isn’t an easy thing, though. Something as simple as a different meal can really help prevent senses of isolation or tedium. At the same time, we can help our neighbors in the food service industry by supporting local business.”

The list was compiled by Treasurer’s Office personnel reaching out to establishments registered with the Special Tax Division, which administers the County’s Alcoholic Beverage Tax. Businesses not currently listed, or those that would like to update their information, are encouraged to contact the Special Tax Division at (412) 350-4196 or webmaster.treasurer@AlleghenyCounty.us. Because of the current situation’s evolving nature, residents are encouraged to contact their preferred establishment at the provided phone number, website, or by third-party delivery app prior to ordering.

The Pittsburgh branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) welcomes Kellie Ware-Seabron, Esq. as its Executive Director

Kellie Ware-Seabron, Esq.

The Pittsburgh branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) welcomes Kellie Ware-Seabron, Esq. as its Executive Director. In her new role, Ware-Seabron will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the branch and manage its programming, community outreach, strategic planning, and fundraising efforts. She will report to the organization’s Executive Committee.

In a statement from the branch’s Search Committee Chairman, K. Chase Patterson says, “Kellie is smart, serious about justice, and totally committed to the mission of the NAACP movement. We believe that she brings a valuable combination of professional and leadership experience that will help to grow the work of the Pittsburgh NAACP as well as our impact on the condition of Black lives in our region. The Executive Committee is excited to work with Kellie and to see the results of her hard work and great ideas.”

Ware-Seabron comes to the NAACP from the City of Pittsburgh, where she served as its inaugural Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy Analyst for City Council. In this role, Kellie worked closely with numerous community and non-profit organizations, and government entities to advance racial equity in the City. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and Northeastern University School of Law, Ware-Seabron’s professional experience includes community economic development and government. Immediately before joining the City, she worked to secure tenants’ rights as a staff attorney at Neighborhood Legal Services.

A Pittsburgh native, Ware-Seabron, said she is “very excited for the opportunity to support the work of the Pittsburgh NAACP at this critical juncture. We’re at a crossroads as to what the future holds for Black folks in this City. Racism is a public health crisis, Black Pittsburghers could move virtually anywhere and have a better quality of life. Now what? I believe the Pittsburgh NAACP can and will play a critical role in moving the needle in the right direction for our City.”

Ware-Seabron officially joins the NAACP on February 1, 2020 and will make her first presentation to the General Membership on February 11, 2020 at 7:00 PM at Jeron X. Grayson Center – 1852 Enoch St, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
