Meet Melvyn D. HayesA gregarious gentleman, A poet, is a native of Pittsburgh, PA from the Hill District. Currently a junior majoring in Communicative Arts at the University of Pittsburgh, he works with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oakland. Hayes is a retired veteran of the U.S. Airforce with 22 years of service.

His poetry focuses on the plight of the Black Community and realigning the Black consciousness of that community at-large with reflection on its past. Moreover, many of his writings indicate a clarion call to action and consciousness to and for the Black Community. Hayes's ultimate inspiration comes from God. "What comes out of me is from God and no one else," he says.

Unity

Unity is the beginning to fellowship.

Love binds fellowship together.

Hope brings about a change.

Change is the turn around to success.

Success is what we are working for to be free.

Freedom is peace – In the hand of God.

Doing, Doing, Doing

So weary in doing, doing, and doing,

while nothing seems to get done.

Many sit back and watch, watch, watch,

while I keep doing, doing, and doing.

I'm tired of listening to people, people, people,

while I try to keep doing, doing, doing,

and nothing still seems to get done.

I found out that many like for me to keep coming, coming,

and coming around, to keep me

from doing, doing, and doing,

while nothing still gets done.

Now it's time for me to work, work, work,

and keep doing, doing, doing,

until all my work is done.
