Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps low/no income families buy food

Are you a low income family or do you know a low income family who could use some assistance with purchasing food until they can get back on their feet? The federal government’s SNAP program does just that.  Traditionally known as the food stamp program, the federal government’s SNAP program assists low and no income families with buying food at local markets and grocery stores, especially nutritious foods such as vegetables and fruits, which usually cost more than other foods in stores, making them more difficult for low income families to purchase.

While SNAP is a federal program, it is administered at the state level. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Public Welfare is in charge of running SNAP. To get more information about SNAP in Pennsylvania, such as downloading an application and what the maximum and minimum benefits are for each family, click here to be taken to the Department of Public Welfare’s SNAP page. To contact SNAP for Pennsylvania by phone, call toll free at 1-800-692-7462

For Pittsburgh residents, Allegheny County’s Department of Human Services has many other food resources for low and no income families, such as the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program. To see the food programs that are available for Allegheny County residents, click here.

While the economy is still recovering, there is good news for young people who want to go to college but who may need financial assistance in order to do so. The fact is that there are (and always will be, no matter what shape the economy is in) plenty of resources that potential college attendees can access in order to find financial assistance so that they can go off and enjoy the college experience. If you click on the links below, you will be taken to websites that have information about different grants and scholarships that are available to families who may not be able to afford to pay for college out of pocket. Some of these links are to government websites and some sites are to non profit organizations who specialize in raising money to help send people to college who otherwise may not be able to afford it on their own. Click on any of the links below to get information on how and where to find money to help finance your college education:

If you are a single mother, click here to be taken to the page on their website that gives information about grants and scholarships for single mothers.

NEED Financial Aid

NEED is a product of the turbulent 1960s. Led by two Pittsburgh women, Marion Jordon and Florence Reizenstein, members of the Urban League Education Committee, it began as a temporary effort to find funds for 76 black high school students who had been accepted to college but could not afford to go. The program quickly expanded with the support of the corporate, philanthropic, and general community.

NEED is a college access program offering financial aid, counseling, and internships to help young African Americans aspire to, learn about, prepare for and complete higher education.

NEED’s vision is to unlock the power of education by helping underserved youth meet their highest potential and enhance their quality of life through education, thereby strengthening the regional economy.

Since its inception in 1963, NEED has supported over 17,000 deserving young people by providing almost $17 million in grants. These grants help empower Pittsburgh’s next generation of leaders to overcome financial, class, cultural and social barriers.

The Bartko Foundation Grant

The Bartko foundation is a Pittsburgh family foundation that makes grants to individual women of color who are custodial mothers, to help them increase the self-sufficiency of their families.  The average grant is about $3,000.   Bartko will fund such things as:  the purchase of a car to help a woman get or keep a job, a security deposit and first month’s rent on an apartment; a down payment on a house; the purchase of a computer or software for a woman returning to school; and tuition assistance.   Bartko cannot fund a debt relief of expenses directly related to children, such as daycare. Requests generally are turned around in four to eight weeks.  For more information or an application visit their website at www.bartkofoundation.com  or call 412-371-1142.

“The Report Card”

reportcardBy Ellen A. Sandidge, MSW
Retired Pittsburgh Public Schools Social Worker

Most school districts in the Pittsburgh area have issued their first quarter evaluation of student progress. The name may be different in the districts but essentially the “Report Card” gives parents a tangible way of determining how well their child is doing.  Too many times parents only rely on this measure of their child’s progress because they don’t realize that more can be determined by using the report card as the entrance to much more critical data.

The “report card” does not tell you about the academic performance level,
that is, where your child is as related to grade level.  If your child is in the fifth grade and is performing at a third grade level there is a problem so it is very important that you know about grade level performance.  [Click here for more] »
