The AACTA Onyx Awards were established to acknowledge and celebrate the talents of African Americans in the Pittsburgh area who participate in productions in the immediate area.  Participants are judged on their work as performers, dancers and technicians.   The awards ceremony is a classy, sophisticated affair, similar to the Academy Awards.
The winners are announced at the ceremony.

Each year approximately 25 awards are presented, including the Rob Penny Lifetime Achievement Award, in honor of the late Rob Penny, former professor at the University of Pittsburgh s Africana Studies Department, playwright, freedom fighter and co-founder of the Kuntu Writers Workshop.

The awards span the spectrum, including best director, best male and female performers, best choreographer, best dancer, best set design, among others.
