12 Round Main Event
Monty Meza-Clay vs Eric Aiken
Friday – February 1st – Pittsburgh Expo Mart, Monroeville
Imagine the explosive force of an 18-wheeler smashing head on into a cement wall. It’s a powerful destructive force, a similar sound to those echoing off the walls of the training room in the Bally’s downtown facility. Where the local sports media gathered Friday afternoon to interview and take motion shots of Monty Meza-Clay sparring with his trainer, Tony.
The power was not only in the deliverance of the Champ’s gloves as he repeatedly connected with his trainer’s but the precision of his punches, on point never missing a beat even as the rap beats of Wiz Khalifa played in the background, “I’m the man, I’m the man.” Pittsburgh’s Champion Monty Meza-Clay (26W-1L, 17KO) is the man and he will prove his champion status on Friday, February 1, 2008, 8pm at the Pittsburgh Expo Mart when he meets Former IBF World Champion Eric “Mighty Mouse” Aiken (97W-5L, 47KO).
Monty and his team recently returned to Pittsburgh from his training camp in California, PA. “I’m ready, I’m feeling good.” Monty says regarding his upcoming fight.
I asked Monty’s PR person Jason what are some of Monty’s future plans. “Monty’s immediate goal is to represent in his fight with Eric Aiken. A win would place him in line to fight for the IBF title later this year.”
Jason informed me that ESPN is highly interested in Monty as he is the highest rated professional boxer in the Pittsburgh region as regulated by boxing major sanctioning bodies. He is ranked 8th WBO - #13 WBA and #14 IBF. Not only is Monty an accomplished boxer but he is a charismatic and determined young man who has plans to venture into business and the large screen. ESPN is coming to Pittsburgh just to see Monty. This is the first time ESPN has shown a live Pittsburgh boxing event since May 8, 2001 the era of Paul Spadafore, a former Pittsburgh boxing champion. Monty’s finest has placed Pittsburgh back on the national boxing map.
The cameras continue to roll as Monty goes back to sparring with his trainer, it was like watching a dedicated dancer, his moves were calculated and the punches landed on point each and every time. His fists moved through the air like lightening as his trained body bounced side to side, up and down, all blending together to deliver that powerful sting.
World Class Fight Promotions and #1 Cochran are the proud sponsors of this national boxing event. Also on Friday night’s card will be an 8-round co-featured bout between undefeated Brian “The Golden Greek” Camechis vs tough Puerto Rican contender Doel Carrasquillo, in addition, to “The Magic” Juan McPherson, Jesse Lubash and Mike “Steel City” Strauss boxing in other bouts. This promises to be an entertaining night, with special artist Wiz Khalifa bringing Monty in the ring with his theme rap “I’m the Man.”
