Founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973 at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock®, internationally renowned a cappella ensemble, has been a vital and innovative presence in the music culture of Washington, D.C., and in communities of conscience around the world.

From Psalm 81:16 comes the promise to a people of being fed by honey out of the rock. Honey – an ancient substance, sweet and nurturing. Rock – an elemental strength, enduring the winds of time. The metaphor of sweet honey in the rock captures completely these African American women whose repertoire is steeped in the sacred music of the Black church, the clarion calls of the civil rights movement, and songs of the struggle for justice everywhere.

Sweet Honey In The Rock is Ysaye Maria Barnwell, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil, Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, and Shirley Childress Saxton.

Purpose of Concert

As the economy world-wide has people facing the challenge of arighting the plight shifting from insufficient to sufficient; unstable to stable and unsecure to more secure, it seems a must for each one of us to consider and help one another in whatever way we can.  Hence, a weekend of music (The other being Ernie Smith and the Resolvers) is being presented here in Pittsburgh to help uplift the Spirit of the area, particularly those actually struggling and in the process render financial help to the Agencies that can and do touch so many lives to help see people through a difficult season in their lives.  People have to eat.  People, in losing their jobs, need guidance at times to help them move on and find new employment.  Both the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the Mon Valley Unemployed Committee help people in these ways.  By sharing proceeds with them, many lives can benefit.

In considering the financial challenge many face it is necessary to think of not only home, the Pittsburgh Area, but also afar.  That is the whole picture.  Jamaica is a country very dependent upon the US and Europe for its financial well-being because its primary Industry is Tourism.  Just as in the US , a substantial amount of people are losing their jobs permanently or facing temporary lay-offs with no unemployment benefits.  While everyone cannot be helped, a group of workers in the Montego Bay area facing a temporary lay-off will receive a portion of the proceeds to help tie them over during their six week furlough.

The Concert is sponsored and promoted by a small group of people who simply find it necessary to help our neighbors – both here at home and abroad.
